Student Group from Ajmer recognized at the 9th Annual Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards organized by DHFL Pramerica Life Insurance Co. Ltd. 28-Mar-2019

Ajmer/Jaipur 28th March 2019 – Five students of class VIII from Beawar, Rajasthan, Shalu Kumari, Sargam Goval, Sejal Bhatt, Manisha Kumari and Sonu Kumari of Govt. Higher Secondary School, Kotra have been recognized for their campaign on water conservation and biodiversity at the 9th Annual Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards(SOCA) organized by DHFL Pramerica Life Insurance Co. Ltd. 

 

Through their campaign, Shalu and team are trying to address problems like water crisis, low rainfall, less forestry and decreasing population of birds and animals in the Beawar region of Rajasthan. Under the guidance of their school teacher, the team started a water and biodiversity conservation campaign in their school setting an example for the people in their village. During the campaign, the team conducted exhibitions, processions and several community awareness rallies to educate and motivate the local population. Started in 2015, the campaign has successfully impacted more than 10,000 people of their locality and many more from neighboring areas.

 

Sharing the experience about the initiative, Shalu Kumari, the team leader said, “Conserving water is conserving life. Our well-being depends on water and therefore conservation of this vital natural resource is essential for our existence.  Rajasthan faces acute water scarcity and Beawar is among the water scarce region of the state. Through this campaign, we are highlighting the importance of water conservation among the members of the community and educating them about the steps to conserve water. We consider this project as an opportunity to give back to the community. It is a matter of pride that our project has been recognized by SOCA.”

 

The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards is a school-level recognition programme for volunteer community service. The awards programme is an extension of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, the largest youth recognition programme in the United States based exclusively on volunteer service. In India, this awards programme was introduced in 2010 and is open to students in classes VI to XII.

 

The 9th Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards Presentation Ceremony is scheduled on 30th March, 2019 where Olympic medalist and former World No. 1 badminton player Saina Nehwal, programme ambassador would be felicitating the group for their extraordinary efforts in the area of community service.

 

The national winners will travel to Washington, D.C. in end April to be a part of the gala award ceremony held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. They would also be taken on a tour of the capital's historic monuments and landmarks and enjoy a festive dinner cruise on the Potomac River. Moreover, there will be plenty of opportunities for these students to share their experiences and ideas with volunteers from other participating countries.
